Psychology concentrates on observing and analysing human behaviour. Many aspects are studied, such as the effects of childhood experiences or cultural surroundings on later life. It aims to assist those who, for any number of reasons, find it difficult to flourish in society. Those who feel their vocation lies in priesthood often find themselves in an extremely respected stratum of society due to the effects their work and faith can have on a community; especially those in need of spiritual guidance. Similarly the Sisters of Mercy were established in 1831 with a view to ‘care for the poor, sick and ignorant’.
