What is Marketing and Digital Media?

This course combines the principles of marketing and digital media to connect organisations to customers and translate customer information via marketing analytics into new knowledge to meet customer needs.

Studying Marketing and Digital Media in college

This course is offered by Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and gives you the opportunity to combine marketing with digital media to develop your knowledge and skills in both areas. It is a Level 8, four year course. There are multiple courses similar to this in other colleges and universities in Ireland as well as PLC courses that will be able to help you find out if this area is for you. 

In your first year of any undergraduate course you will gain a strong foundation in the main areas and focus on the basic principles that will help you throughout the remainder of your course. You will also gain an insight into what is to come throughout your course in the coming years. Examples of modules you will cover in your first year include Digital Media, IT & Communication Skills, Marketing Mix, Social Media Technologies, Market Pricing, Introduction to Management, Principles of Marketing and Macroeconomic Environment. 

In your second and third year of your studies you will be introduced to more complex and in-depth information and modules. Content that you will focus on throughout these two years will range from Digital Media, Applied Services Marketing, Introduction to Advertising, Print Media Advertising Digital Media, Applied Services Marketing and Introduction to Advertising to Web Development, Advertising Message & Media Planning and Digital Creativity & Design. You will also choose an elective module between Marketing/Advertising Project and Sports Marketing.

Also in your third year you will have the opportunity to do work placement to develop your skills and knowledge and apply all you have learned practically while working in the field. You will also have the opportunity to do International Placement. 

Your fourth year will see you focusing on a wide variety of modules including Digital Media Advertising, Strategic Public Relations, Web Design, SEO & Analytics, Digital Marketing, Global Strategic Marketing and Strategic Brand Management. 

Aside from this you will choose from a number of electives for your final year. 

Career Options

This is quite a broad area of work and therefore there are a wide variety of career prospects and opportunities. These include opportunities in areas from Online Media, Advertising and Marketing/Market Research to Brand Management, Sports Sponsorship, Sales & Purchasing and Public Relations.

There is also the opportunity to study at postgraduate level to specialise in an area of your interest. Opportunities are also in education and research. 

Skills and qualities that are important in this area include strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, computer skills, time management skills, organisation skills, the ability to work well with others and follow direction, an analytical mind, a problem solver and the ability to be creative. You will also need the ability to carry out research and keep up to date with market trends.

FAQ

Different courses and different colleges will have different entry requirements. It’s always safest to check with the individual higher education institution which is available on their websites. As a general rule Leaving Cert students should have a minimum of six subjects which should include: Two H5 (Higher Level) grades and Four O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades. Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English. 

Specific courses may have their own requirements.Certain QQI courses may be accepted. 

Points required to study this course in WIT were 271 points last year.
