It can be a difficult choice deciding whether to take the transition year or not. Some students are afraid they will lose their friends who continue straight onto the leaving cert class and some people worry that they won’t be able to keep up with their studies after taking a year off. For others, it is a clear-cut certainty that they simply have to do the transition year.
It is a personal decision and what is right for some people is wrong for others so it is important you make an informed decision based on what you think is right for you. After all, you will always see your leaving cert class friends at break and after school, and many students also find that transition year gives them the confidence and skills to adjust to their leaving cert studies better than they if they hadn’t done the transition year!
The main thing is to make sure you get all the information about transition year from your school and see if the programme and its aims are of interest to you. Seek advice from your teachers and parents too. Ask yourself if you prefer practical, hands-on education to mere classroom-based teaching methods and constant study? Do you think you learn things quicker if you learn them in context – such as learning about business by working in one rather than studying theories from textbooks? Perhaps you would just like the chance to see?
Well, if you answered “yes” to any of these questions you may find that a transition year is just the ticket for you!
