Course Description
Medical Secretary
Aim
This course prepares students for employment opportunities in a medical setting using the latest software. The course provides training in the use of office productivity software (Microsoft) as well as medical software i.e. the Helix Practice Manager application. This software is widely used in hospitals and General Practitioner settings. Emphasis is also placed on developing good communication and interpersonal skills.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Cert/Leaving Cert Applied or its equivalent. For mature students, work experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview

Medical Secretaries provide administrative support to the medical profession, e.g., secretaries/receptionists in hospitals, GP practices and medical centres. The course includes Medical Terminology which is essential to work in this area. A qualified Medical Secretary will need to have:
An interest in health and medical matters
Tact and empathy when dealing with patients
Good computer and administrative skills
Good spoken/written communication skills
Respect for confidentiality
Progression
Graduates who achieve the required standard may progress to further studies to the Certificate in Administration Level 6 available in the College or to Institutes of Technology and Universities. Examples of progression courses include:
