Over 100 secondary school students have already signed up for ‘Try SETU’ events to help them choose the right courses for them. Try SETU events are running on various dates between 7 December 2023 and 11 January 2024, with more events planned over the coming months.
By signing up for the workshops second-level students will have the opportunity to try out areas they are interested in studying at third level. Some Try events are already booked out with remaining places filling up fast. Try Science is in high demand with this year’s school students.
Taking place on Monday, 11 December, Try Science is a fun and interactive laboratory-based event. Students will have the opportunity to engage with lecturers and researchers from all science-related disciplines, who will help them decide if a lab science course is a right choice for them.
Head of School of Science and Computing, Prof. Peter McLoughlin says, “Try Science will be a fun and interactive laboratory-based event which will allow students to experience our wide range of science degrees including Pharmaceutical Science, Physics for Modern Technology, Molecular Biology & Biopharmaceutical Science, Food Science & Innovation, Agriculture & Agricultural Science, Horticulture and Forestry. This immersive experience will showcase all our programmes giving students an insight into many exciting and diverse career opportunities.”
Prof. McLoughlin continued by saying, “Rapid advancements in our growing pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and medical device industry have opened many opportunities for our skilled scientists to choose career paths in highly innovative environments both locally and internationally.”
There have been exciting developments in the areas of food science and nutrition where science-led innovation is leading to the development of healthier and smarter products to support our lifestyles. “Demand for agricultural scientists is increasing as we are met with challenges in food production, food security, and sustainability,” Prof. McLoughlin says, “Horticulture and forestry address the importance of managing ecosystems, sustainability, addressing the biodiversity crisis and climate change.”
Several other discipline-specific ‘Try’ events are also planned for this month. Occurring on Thursday, 7 December, Try Social Science is proving to be popular among secondary students with many spaces filled. The interactive experience highlights how social science can broaden horizons, open debate, and give everyone a say in shaping our collective future.
Meanwhile, the School of Business at the Cork Road campus is running its hugely popular Try Business event. During this morning-long event, participants will have the opportunity to engage in four aspects of business education including finance/economics, enterprise, accounting, and social media marketing.
Due to popular demand, Try Computing on Tuesday, 12 December is fully booked. However, students will have a second chance to try this event on Thursday, 11 January 2024. Try Computing relates directly to courses on offer at SETU, such as Computer Science, Software Systems Development, Computer Forensics and Security, Creative Computing, and Information Technology. Participants will be given a tour of the computing facilities, where they will take part in an ‘Hour of Code’ workshop, along with talks and demonstrations.
SETU Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr Derek O’Byrne explains that the Try events exemplify SETU’s commitment to assisting students in making well-informed decisions.
Noting the University’s “right student, right program” ethos, he said, “Having a wide variety of Try events means that prospective students get to experience first-hand what it is like to study a certain discipline.” In addition to Try events, students have the option to explore common entry courses.
Emphasising SETU’s role in helping prospective students to make choices aligned with their preferences, Dr O’Byrne says, “Helping prospective students make the right choice for them is something we care strongly about at SETU.”
