Three Irish colleges have been included in the prestigious Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 2014 league table. They are: Dublin Institute of Technology, which made its debut on the list, entering at 94th place; Dublin City University (DCU), which placed 92nd on the list; and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, which landed in 67th place.
The 100 Under 50 list is compiled using 13 performance indicators such as research income, teaching reputation, number of PhDs awarded, number of scholarly papers published, and staff citations. These are the same criteria as those used by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. However, the 100 Under 50 list differs in that it adapts its methodology to the characteristics of younger colleges.
The purpose of the list is to bring attention to colleges that have been performing extremely well over the last number of decades and which have been earmarked as having the potential to develop into elite-level academic institutes.
Given the well-reported funding cuts to the third-level sector here, the inclusion of three Irish institutes on the 100 Under 50 list is a welcome boost to Ireland’s reputation as a top study location.
Commenting on the rankings, President of NUI Maynooth, Professor Philip Nolan, said: ‘While rankings are subjective in nature and built largely on opinion, this achievement is recognition of the scholarly reputations of our staff, the quality of our research, and our collective efforts to provide an outstanding education for our students.’
