Do you have a great idea for a television show? How about working on live sports and music events around the world? The Department of Media Communications at Cork Institute of Technology has teamed up with RTÉ and outside broadcasting company TVM to create the Certificate in Television Production – a highly specialised Television Production course to prepare students for this growing industry.
About this Television Production Course
Students may come from different backgrounds- multimedia, journalism, music as well as technical. The course is aimed at those wanting to launch a career in TV programme making, as well as those already in the industry wanting to upskill. Television is going through a transformation and the industry needs people to help fulfill the need for more content.
“The world of media is rapidly changing,” says Head of RTÉ Cork, Colm Crowley. “There are many new platforms, many new types of distribution. We need to ensure that there is a pipeline of trained people coming through the system all the time and RTÉ is proud to play a role in helping make that happen.”
Work Placements
A key element of the course is the innovative placement programme in both RTÉ and TVM, which will allow students to work side by side with production professionals. TVM is one of the country’s largest outside broadcast companies, covering sports, music and cultural events.
Its clients include BBC, Sky Sports, Channel 4 as well as RTÉ, Virgin Media and TG4. Students will get work experience in both RTÉ and TVM’s Cork-based headquarters and on outside broadcasting units for major broadcast clients. In RTÉ’s studios, participants will become integral members of the production team on live and pre-recorded programmes.
A bespoke, student-specific training plan will mentor and support students throughout their placements. The placement provides an invaluable insight into how the industry functions, the roles within the sector and how the creative and production process works. Training will be built around students’ individual needs.

Broadcasters and production companies need a wide range of personnel to create and broadcast content – researchers, producers, camera operators, editors, vision and IT engineers, graphic designers.
