This year’s Leaving Cert is to return to its traditional exam only process this summer for the first time since 2019.
The accredited grades system which was in place in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and saw students being marked based on teachers’ estimated marks, will not be an option this year
There had been a strong call for a hybrid model this year for the Leaving Cert, with an option for the accredited system to be used. According to the Government this was not an option, particularly in light of grade inflation over the last two years. “One in four Leaving Cert students do not have Junior Cert data and so it would not be possible to fairly provide for accredited grades”, Foley said earlier today.
The Junior Cycle will return to its traditional exams format also.
Leaving Certificate 2022 Is To Be Exams Only
For many the decision will be controversial. The decision not to proceed with a hybrid Leaving Cert this year is a “crushing blow for students and their families”, according to Social Democrats Education Spokesperson Gary Gannon. While Sinn Fein TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire felt it was a ”desperate decision” and that he was ”absolutely gutted for Leaving Cert students.”
Minister for Education Norma Foley has given a commitment that the profile of grades received by students in this year’s exams will be no lower than those of last year in a bid to quell concerns that this year’s students are competing for college places against last year’s students who received bumper grades.
