90 GMIT students were awarded scholarships in recognition of their academic, personal, sporting, and cultural achievements at a virtual ceremony last week attended by the students, their families, school principals, school guidance counsellors and GMIT staff.
The students, who are studying a range of programmes in all five GMIT campuses, are from counties in the west, the midlands, Dublin, Wicklow, Waterford, and Cork, and have been studying mainly online since the start of this 2020/21 academic year.
Speaking at the online awards ceremony, the President of GMIT, Dr Orla Flynn, said: “One of the highlights of the academic year in GMIT has always been the traditional annual scholarships ceremony, where we welcome our scholarship students, their families, lecturers and school staff to Galway for a very special evening.”
“While we were disappointed that we couldn’t meet everyone in person this year, we wanted to ensure our scholarship recipients were formally recognised for their achievements. This year’s scholarship recipients have had to quickly adapt to the new styles of learning that the COVID pandemic has brought into our lives and I have no doubt that they will be among the most resilient and adaptable of our graduates.”
