News last week that 300 million euro in funding would be invested in research here over the next six years is something that should be generally greeted with a healthy dose of optimism.
The money, which is to be provided by both the taxpayer and the private sector, will benefit the following research areas: ICT and web technologies; food research; renewable energy studies; and the use of nanotechnology in IT and medical devices.
The funding marks perhaps the most dramatic of the government’s ongoing efforts at developing the research facilities at Irish colleges, as well as enhancing the international reputation of same. The Jobs Minister Richard Bruton claimed that the planned enhancements would represent significant ‘game-changers’ for Irish scientific research’.
