Community groups, teachers, family members asked to encourage inspiring young people they know to apply for the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) President’s scholarship
Students attending WIT’s CAO Information Evening on Tuesday 5 April were the first to hear in detail about the brand new WIT President’s Scholarship Programme.Prospective students travelled from across Ireland to the event to be the first to hear full details about the programme.
For September 2016, WIT is offering an exciting new scholarship scheme which encourages and rewards young people who show a capacity to shape a better society.
The new programme will see five exceptional young students being awarded scholarships with a total value of up to €12,000. Each President’s Scholar will receive a bursary of €2,000 per year of study along with €500 per semester on each student’s WITCard (college smart card).
“Our new scholarship programme celebrates the person. Life is more than just points. Our new scholarship is celebrating people as individuals. At WIT, we believe that many types of people shape our world. Some are creative, some are innovators, others are great leaders and more make significant contributions to community, and in our search for this year’s President’s Scholars, we are looking for students with all or some of these skills. In essence, we are looking for remarkable people who demonstrate the ability to make Irish society a better place,” said WIT President, Prof Willie Donnelly.
“Young people can be modest and may not realise the impact of their own achievements be it in the community, in creative fields, or in groups or organisations they play a role in. We are appealing to people who are aware of school leavers and college applicants interested in studying one of our 70 CAO courses at WIT to encourage them to apply for our Scholarship programme.”
Esther Doyle, PRO, Institute of Guidance Counsellors South East Branch at the launch of the Scholarship welcomed the programme:
“The Institute of Guidance Counsellors is delighted to support the innovative President’s Scholarship at WIT. Education is more than academic, it is about fostering leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, environment and social awareness among our young people, so they can become change agents and leaders in our society.
“This scholarship recognises the contribution that young people are making to society that goes beyond their school work. We congratulate Prof Willie Donnelly, President of WIT, for his promotion of holistic education and the value he places on creativity, innovation and participation in the wider community.”
President’s Scholars will also be part of the Student Ambassador programme for the duration of their studies, representing the college and the Academic School in which they study.

There will be one scholarship available in each of the five disciplines: Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, and Science & Computing.Eligibility, terms and conditions can be found on:

WIT will run a live online CAO Change of Mind Q&A from 3-5pm on Monday 27 June right through to Friday, 1 July. A team of academics and admissions officers will be online to answer queries. See
