Few sectors are as lively as the IT sector is at this moment in time. Because technology is changing the way that business is conducted, and because it is hurtling forward at such a relentless pace, the demand for IT graduates is not only strong, it is urgent.
The growth of the technology sector is such that it has resulted in a skills shortage in Ireland. Not too long ago the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation published a report that showed that there are 4,500 job vacancies in the IT sector in Ireland. Yes, you read that correctly: 4,500 unfilled positions.
That particular report came before the most recent announcements of the creation of yet more IT positions (in Cloud Computing to be more specific) both in Dublin and in Cork.
It is almost certain that the number of vacant IT jobs will continue to grow unless there is an increase in the number of students enrolling on effective IT courses (this includes everything from programming to digital marketing to cloud computing, and everything in between). During a time of such economic turmoil, the availability – indeed, the growing availability – of jobs in any sector is worthy of serious investigation, as are the courses that offer preparation for those roles.
