What is QQI? QQI stands for Quality and Qualifications Ireland. It is the national agency responsible for quality assurance and qualifications in further and higher education and training in Ireland.
What is QQI?
- QQI was established in 2012 under the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act.
- It brought together four predecessor organizations – FETAC, HETAC, NQAI and IUQB.
- QQI is responsible for maintaining the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), a system of 10 levels used to classify qualifications in Ireland.
- It validates education and training programs and sets standards for awards offered in the NFQ by providers such as universities, colleges and education centers.
- QQI is also charged with monitoring quality assurance procedures in education institutions to ensure standards are maintained.
- Another role is authorizing the use of international education and training marks and aligning Irish qualifications with those of other countries.
- QQI aims to promote access, transfer and progression across education sectors and improve recognition of Irish qualifications abroad.
- It provides advice on national policy and criteria for funding education and training providers.
- QQI also undertakes research, produces reports and provides information to the public about the NFQ framework.
