Studying Creative Digital Media in college
This course is offered by Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) which is one of the only places to offer this exact course. Similar courses can be found in other colleges and universities in Ireland as well as PLC courses that may give you an idea of if this area is of interest to you. This is a four year, Level 8 course.
Your first year of any undergraduate course will act as a foundation year and help you to become familiar with the basic principles of creative digital media. You will become familiar with all the key areas that you will need going forward throughout your course. Modules you will study in your first year include Moving Image and Sound, Design Basics, Web Design Basics, Creative Enterprise, Introduction to Digital Media, Interaction and Media and Multimedia Project Management as well as a group project.
In your second year of study you will be introduced to more complex and in-depth information and concepts throughout your modules. These modules range from Interpreting Sounds and Music, Interactive Scripting, Creative Image Design and Portfolio Development to User Experience Design, Media, Culture and Society and Human Interface Design to name a few.
In your third year you will be given the opportunity to do work placement to apply your knowledge practically. You will become familiar with working in the field while in the other semester of the same year you’ll focus on modules including Marketing and Media Law, Ethics and Aesthetics, AV Technology, E-Learning and Experimental Video among others.
Your final year will see you continue your study of a wide range of modules including Media, Business and Enterprise, Digital Culture and Ethics and Professional Ethics as well as many others. You will also focus on your final year Multimedia Project.

Career opportunities in this area are quite broad with opportunities in areas from Web Design, Video/Animation, Programming, E-learning, Gaming and VR, Music Technology and more. It is an area that can cross over into journalism and media as well as business also.

As a general rule Leaving Cert students should have a minimum of six subjects which should include: Two H5 (Higher Level) grades and Four O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades. Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English.
