What is IT management?

Studying information technology management in college
There are a number of courses available in the area of Information Technology and computer related courses but not a huge amount under the exact title of Information Technology Management. IT Carlow offers two courses under the exact title while there are many other relevant courses available at both undergraduate level and PLC courses. PLC courses will generally be 3-4 years while PLC courses will be round 1 year.
Your first year in your IT Management course will be a foundation year to help find your bearings and be introduced to the area as well as gain an understanding for the overall course and what will come your way throughout. Your first year will see you cover areas such as mathematics, operating systems, programming, computer hardware, networking and applications and interpersonal to name a few.
In your second, third and sometimes even your fourth year you will be introduced to more complex material as you move through your course and begin to add to the basic knowledge and improve and apply your skills. Year two might see you cover subjects from web programming and databases to secure systems administration and business management to name a few.
Your third year/fourth year/final year will look at areas such as information systems, project management, recent and emerging IT Technologies, management accounting, people management skills for IT managers and many more. As this is quite a practical course, like any computer courses, you will also take on work placement to gain experience in the working world of IT and apply your knowledge practically to get a feel for the field.
Career options
The world of IT is a broad area to work in and therefore, there are many opportunities in the computer world. The most obvious role in that of an IT Manager. Aside from that there are many roles you can work in. See below for examples.
Aside from that there is also the option of continuing on your study at postgraduate level as well as continuing into the area of education such as working in research and teaching in universities and colleges eventually.
Skills and qualities that are both helpful and important in this area include being a strong communicator, organisation skills, good time management, good knowledge of IT and computers, maths skills, a problem solver, a critical thinker, analytical skills, the ability to work well with others and able to keep up with new technologies.

Different courses and different colleges will have different entry requirements. It’s always safest to check with the individual higher education institution which is available on their websites. As a general rule Leaving Cert students should have a minimum of six subjects which should
include: Two H5 (Higher Level) grades and Four O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades. Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English.
The required points for IT Management in IT Carlow last year were 234 points for the 3 year course and 285 points for the four year course. Related courses in Information Technology may range from 200-350 points.
